Evaluation for Film poster and DVD sleeve

Evaluation for Film Poster and DVD Sleeve

Research
At the start of my graphics unit I chose to make a mind map on the various types of movie genres and hybrids that there were. I did this because I was unsure of what genre to choose for my poster. First was the research on the types of genres, and how many there were to chose from. Then In my proposal I aimed to create a hybrid genre romance/sad film. I aimed for it to be created in portrait and I intended the age range to be 15.

Codes and conventions
I analysed a variety of posters that had different types of codes and conventions, such as different font looks and how the posters are displayed and how they look and the message that the poster is supposed to give. This involved how the poster shows the theme and how characters are shown on the posters.

Subject genre – romance/sad
I had then decided to create a hybrid genre romance/sad film poster. Next was planning how I wanted my poster to look. I wanted to make my poster look like a piece of journal paper, but I wanted to give it a twist since it is mainly based around a homosexual version of Romeo and Juliet.

Fonts and titles
For my Font/title I decided to go to Da-Font and I used the font ‘Always beside you’ by Jonathan S. Harris. Since I wanted my idea to look a bit like a journal entry I decided to hand draw this font so that it looked a bit rougher and authentic.

Your written synopsis
‘Romeo Montague (Rylan Hollingworth) and Julian Capulet (Ashley Willcock) are two lovers drawn apart by Society and their un-supportive parents. The two star struck lovers have to fight against the discrimination to live in a free world of equality and happiness. But will it work out?’

Your sketches and designs – explain how you have worked through your ideas
I made some basic design layouts, working on different ideas for my piece. Though I decided not to follow any of them because I decided to make it look like a redo of the original.

What transferable skills you have developed CS4 applications: Photoshop, illustrator
The transferable skills I used to make my work better were illustrator and Photoshop. I used Illustrator to neaten the Title just a little bit. Though I used Photoshop to overall make the poster, I used various layers, and I used many tools to make my poster the way it is. I mainly used ‘scale and ‘rotate, to make the main parts of my poster.

Photography – photo shoots and internet resources
For Photography I used two male classmates. And I asked them to make themselves look like a couple, and then I asked for them to look like they were going in for a kiss. I had trouble with this because they couldn’t keep a straight face; they were finding it extremely uncomfortable to be nearly 10 centimetres away from each other.

Poster through development – illustrator and Photoshop
The first thing I did was scan the hand drawn title and I refined the curves on the lettering by using illustrator. I then began using Photoshop to begin gathering and adding my Photos and putting them through a series of different layers. Each layer was altered, by changing saturation and the Hue. To make colours different. I used Scale and Rotate to make the gun and the photo frame look like they’ve just been dropped. Each of these steps were also used for the DVD sleeve.

Analysing the finished product- both film poster and DVD sleeve
For my finished movie poster I think that the positives on it is that it turned out exactly as I imagined it. Although there was one negative thing I didn’t like about my poster, and that was that it didn’t look finished in my opinion when I looked back at it a few weeks later. On terms of the layout, I’d say that I positioned the images that were in my poster correctly; I wanted to make it look almost similar to the original film, So I had to make sure that the frame and its picture were placed correctly, that the flag was right and that it wasn’t too bright to over power the poster, and to make sure that all the images had connections to the film I created. For fonts I needed to make sure that it was romantic and suited the display. I personally think that the font made the poster look more suited to the genre of the film; it gives off a sort of happy emotion. The people I included in this were told to break the stereotypes and they had to move as close as they could to give off the look that they were a homosexual couple. I asked my models to give off the body language that they were a couple, and to compose themselves whilst having the picture taken so that they could make the image look real.
As for my DVD sleeve I think that the positives are that it fits with the front cover and I have managed to suit the look to the actual genre of the film though the one negative I had with my DVD sleeve was that it looked empty, I could tell it was completed but it looked empty because there was still a bit too much open space.

Basic Layout Designs

Basic Layout design

My Poster Idea is Romeo And Julian.
This idea is a hybrid Romance/Sad film poster design about a homosexual romance between Romeo and Julian

I had chosen to design my font by hand drawing it to make it look more original, to look it was a doodle in a diary.

I had drawn four ideas that could possibly be used for my poster, though, i am thinking of something entirely different that might make my poster look better.

Poster Development

Poster Development

For my background I used the gay flag. This shows that the film's theme is obviously based on a Homosexual story. I acquired this image from an internet resource.

The gay flag is the background to my poster because I have decided to do a twist on the hybrid genre classic, Romeo and Juliet. By instead calling it 'Romeo And Julian'

I designed my title, by free drawing a pre-made font, and changing bits to my specifications. I then scanned my work though a scanner and began editing the title through both photoshop and illustrator. With the help of photoshop i used a tool called colour range, that removed all the white background from the scan that my writing was on.
Whilst on Adobe illustrator i neatened the roughness on my title, and made it look better and smoother.
I next gathered an image of a photograph frame from an internet source. Through photoshop i then used 'free transform' and i scaled and rotated the photograph frame.
The reason i chose this specific photo frame is because it looked old fashioned, even though the film i am creating is based in the present day.

After that I gathered my models, Rylan and Ashley to act as my main characters for my poster. I prepared a photo-shoot in the studio where I got them to pretend that they were leaning in for a little kiss.
Once I had my digital images I used the program Adobe photoshop to edit the photographs. The techniques I used was Colour Range, Colour Range can be found in the 'select' tab. The colour range technique helps to take away the white screen around the two objects/models. I also scaled the photo so that I would be able to fit nicely inside the frame.

The next step was to remake a white screen in the background to make the image look more like a framed photograph. My original ideas was to make the background of the framed photograph look more authentic by using a sepia filter, however, I struggled to remember how to apply this.

I needed to rotate the white screen background to match up with the photo frame and the two character in the photograph.

I next added a Tagline. It took a lot of thought and planning, using mind maps to develop my tagline ideas. I finally decided a tagline that was suitable for the film, it was decided and the tagline was 'Till Death Do They Part' I opened up Adobe Photoshop and used the text tab to create the Tagline to add to my poster.

My next task was to add the weapon. I gathered an image from an internet source and I saved it to my memory stick. I then had to flip the image by going to edit, clicking the 'free transform' tab and then clicking 'flip horizontal' to flip the image the way I wanted it.

There was a problem that I noticed which was the writing on the gun was backwards. So I needed to edit that out. I used 'eyedropper tool' and I selected the colour of grey around the writing, before painting over the writing. I then tried to blend the colour into the original colour of the gun so that it'd suit.

Next was the credit bar. I gathered the credit bar from an internet source given by college, I then took my credit bar to photoshop, using colour range to edit the white out of the background of the credit bar. I next edited my name and my models names into the credit bar, also changing the producer to myself. I finally changed the colour of the writing in the credit bar from black to white.
The reason I changed the colour of the writing on my credit bar was because the place I wanted to place it was dark, so I changed the writing on the credit bar from a different colour, I think that it turned out better.
After this I went back to my internet sources and gathered a BBFC age rating sign. I picked 15 because I gave the film the same rating as the traditional Romeo and Juliet.
The last thing I needed to add to my poster was a watermark, this was to show what company produced it. I gathered my image from an internet source and I used colour range on photoshop to get the white background off.

Skin tutorial: photoshop touch-up

 Skin tutorial: Photoshop touch-up

In class today, we learnt how to make an image look better in photoshop. We took an image of a girl from an online source, downloaded it and opened it on photoshop.

The first thing I had to do was use the spot healing brush tool. I used this to clear her blemishes and pimples off her face. From this, the women's face on the image started to look much clearer. When using the spot healing brush I was able to increase or decrease the brush size by using shift, squiggly square bracket, using either the left to decrease and the right to increase the size.

My next step was to duplicate the layer. I did this by going to the menu bar, clicking layer then duplicate layer. I needed to make a duplicate layer to add the smart blur filter. I processed this by clicking filter, blur then smart blur. The outcome of this looked very fuzzy, however, I hadn't completed the whole process.

I then needed to add a layer mask so I could erase the areas that didn't need smoothing out such as the hair, nostrils, eyebrows, eyes, mouth and teeth. This method was done by using the paintbrush tool and making sure the colour was black.

The outcome looked very similar to what I have seen in beauty and fashion magazines, such as Vogue.

My Poster Proposal

Amber Garland Poster Proposal

The working title I have chosen to create is a Hybrid genre romance/sad film.
The medium I shall be producing is going to be a print poster in a portrait fashion. I have chosen to do a poster because they are one of the most popular forms of advertisement.
The intended audience will be people aged 15+. This is because there may be scenes not suitable for younger ages.
The indicated style is light, fluffy, simple and also bright. This is to show that it will be a fluffy romance, but it may also show an element of sadness.
The summary of the content entails a Title, a tagline, and image, a background and a credit bar.

The size of the poster I am creating is going to be in various sizes like A3, A2 and A4. So that the poster can be hung on large walls, on lamp posts and in Adshells.

Self Portrait

In My Media class i was told to create a self portrait on Adobe Illustrator. Firstly I had to take a picture of myself on Photo Booth.
Afterwards I opened up Adobe Illustrator and created a new document. I place my photograph onto illustrator and began using a tool called the Pen Tool.

This is the pen tool. it is used to create a small line. you place a point on what you want to go around and then you can press a point and move the mouse to bend the line into the way you'd like it.

This is what the pen tool does. The blue line around the drawing is the pen tools net.

This tool is used to add colour, gradient and even give no fill. I used this tool to add colour detail onto my self portrait.

This was my finished product. My illustrated self portrait. I look very similar to my original photo.
